Crossing the Mackinac Bridge
Waking up before sunrise, our Array Crew got to work setting up Aevum’s solar array for charging. The bright sun was a sign of good things to come.
The team departed from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, who graciously hosted us for the evening, and Aevum drove out onto US 23, following along the gleaming shores of Lake Huron. At our second checkpoint in Cheboygan, we came together to discuss our strategy for entering the Upper Peninsula. We needed to watch out for the wind speed, traffic, and any construction on the road.
Fortunately, the wind speeds were tolerable, traffic was surprisingly low, and construction required no re-routing. Aevum drove across the Mackinac Bridge with ease, and we paid the toll to enter the UP.
Cell service was sparse here, so we attempted to stick together as best as we could as the team proceeded to Kinross Township. Frequent radioing was done to make sure we were in range with one another. Once we arrived, we pointed Aevum’s array at the setting sun for one last charge.
Here, we were greeted by the local kids and adults who saw our car passing by in the neighborhood. It was great to be able to highlight the work that has been put into building Aevum and showing what can be done by students alone. We’re glad that we’ve been able to drive through communities that we haven’t been able to visit in a while!
