Help us build one of the world’s fastest solar cars and bring home the 2025 World Solar Challenge!
Enpower the Leaders of Tomorrow
Our Initiative
From Michigan to University of Michigan Solar Car
As our team prepares for the 2025 World Solar Challenge this August in Australia, one of our distinguished alumni, Andy Walberer (’93), is gearing up for an incredible feat of his own.
This July, Walberer will swim 45 miles across lake Michigan, finishing at the Chicago Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, where he will be received by our 1993 Maize & Blue solar car and a UM alumni reunion event. The swim will take over 24 hours of continuous swimming, spanning an entire night and day. Andy Walberer is a prime example of what Solar Car alumni are, people willing to push the world’s limits, from technological to physical.
Through Andy’s story we want to show that when you support the U-M Solar Car team, you aren’t just financing the manufacturing of a solar car, you are powering amazing life stories. Help our solar car spark more stories like Andy’s. Empower the leaders of the future.
Our Objective
With new regulations coming into play at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, our team has gone to work, pushing the boundaries of innovation to outpace our rivals and bring home our first world championship this August. To take the fastest and most efficient car to Australia, we need a significant financial boost. That’s why we’re rallying our friends and supporters to stand with us, fuel our journey, and help us make history on the world stage!
Our goal is to raise $100,000 by August 1st to give us the final push we need to reach the starting line in Darwin on August 24th. These funds will go toward making our final payment for the solar array and air freighting our car to Australia. With your support, you’re not just helping us get there—you’re powering us to win the biggest solar transcontinental challenge in the world.
Join us, help us become world champions, and empower the leaders of tomorrow!

Introducing our 2025 Legacy Challenge! The past car with the greatest donation value will have their car logo displayed on our next Solar Car.
Each past solar car will have their own donation link that can be found below. Please select whichever car you would like to represent and donate through that link. This is important! Your donation will only count towards that car’s total if you donate through its specific page. Then follow the prompts to complete your donation. You can watch the progress of the challenge using the donation leaderboard and compete against your fellow alums!
The winners of this challenge will be the car that raised the greatest amount of money over the campaign. The logo for that car will be displayed on our next Solar Car for at least the duration of the 2025 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. Since the wrap will need to be completed before the conclusion of the campaign, we will be adding the logo afterward. Additionally, donors for the winning team will be sent a special thank you message at the conclusion of the campaign as well as receive special recognition at the unveiling event.
